STAFF PICKS
We have been selling motorcycle gear for 14 years now, and one of the questions we keep getting asked is "what do you wear on the bike?" We highly rate all of the items we sell, or we wouldn't have selected them in the first place. But when it comes to our personal preferences, we are fortunate enough to be able to cherry-pick exactly what suits our needs and style.
Our next subject needs no introduction. Tim became the face of the Urban Rider youtube channel two years ago and has since been guiding our customers through their purchasing journey with his in-depth video reviews. As part of the job, Tim has needed to get familiar with every product that gets added to the ever-growing Urban Rider catalogue, so his opinion on gear carries extra weight. Which items has he deemed worthy to be added to his own motorcycle wardrobe? We have dusted off Andrew and sent him on a mission to find out. Enjoy the video!

ARAI RAPIDE HELMET
“Let's start with my practical lid. Vlogging was the main consideration and this one is a little more cosseting than some other retro helmets which is good for wind proofing and removing unwanted external noise.”
For their debut “modern classic” lid Arai have channelled 80s looks with a nod to the aggressive naked and streetfighter style. The Rapide has a clean, minimalist shape with handsome contours in place to hide clever, multi-stage air channels that run both over and around the shell. This stringently tested shell is formed using a smooth PB e-cLc (Arai’s often lauded Peripherally Belted Laminate shell) to give it impressive strength while shedding precious weight at the same time. The helmet has obviously passed ECE approval.
BYCITY THE ROCK HELMET
“I've always liked the looks of the Bell Moto 3 or the Shoei Ex-Zero. This is the one that won out because it has a little bit of extra style and is ridiculously lightweight.”
Bring a retro, off-road attitude to the streets with the Bycity The Rock helmet. Featuring classic MX inspired styling combined with classy and refined highlights, and a super-wide viewing aperture, The Rock is destined to be the helmet of your summer.
The compact and lightweight fibreglass shell combined with a plush removable and washable interior provides all-ride comfort on the bike and keeps you looking at the top of your game. The leather trim and metal vents on the chin guard are reminiscent of some of the high fashion motorcycle helmets on the market, but The Rock comes in at a far more attractive price point.
100% BARSTOW GOGGLES
“We've featured the Barstow 100% goggles on pretty much every 'staff picks' and with good reason. Excellent quality and useability are the two big takeaways.”
The Barstow from 100% are a premium goggle with impressive technical specifications and stunning classic looks. These goggles are designed with attention to detail: The leather strap trim, subtly pin-striped frame and enamel-coated metal badge gives them a luxurious look. Every aspect of these goggles shows that you're dealing with a quality product, down to the embossed metal strap adjustors and the embroidered strap.
BELSTAFF BROOKLANDS PRO WAX JACKET
“If you try it on, wear it a little bit longer, live with it most importantly, you know where the money's gone. It's a special 'not for everyday' jacket even though it's my everyday jacket.”
The Belstaff Brooklands is a true motorcycling icon and is regarded by many as the quintessential short-cut motorcycle jacket. This updated Brooklands Pro edition updates the design with an impressive safety specification and modern functionality but with the same go-everywhere attitude and timeless styling.
Staying true to the much loved original formula, the Brooklands Pro is a short length, unobtrusive jacket with a 10oz Wax Cotton outer. This fabric in itself is already very sturdy by nature and passes the new CE abrasion tests on itself, but Belstaff backed it up with Cordura panels in the high impact areas to offer even better abrasion resistance. The shoulders and elbows come equipped with D3O CE certified armour and there is a pocket for an optional back protector.
MERLIN DRIFTER EXPLORER JACKET
“I've seen loads of things from Merlin that make me say 'maybe i'll get that' but this is the one that made me pull the trigger. I guess because of the practicalities to it.”
The stylish and casual Drifter Explorer jacket from Merlin aims to help push the motorcycle industry forward to a greener future. Crafted with the eco-conscious adventurer in mind, Merlin uses 100% organic ripstop cotton from Halley Stevensons® that’s soft-tumbled for a vintage look and feel. The water-repellent finish is entirely fluorocarbon-free, and the Drifter is produced using 45% less CO2e and 50% less water, resulting in a sustainable, future-proof riding jacket.
HELSTONS CONDOR LEATHER GLOVES
“I like these a lot, because they are as lightweight as they are. They are as simple as it gets for a leather glove.”
Helstons excels at dignified simplicity with the beige and black Condor glove. Made of premium quality full grain goat hide, these gloves are lavishly soft and more resilient than cow leather, making them sturdy whilst feeling more like a luxurious fashion glove. Don’t be fooled though - these gloves have passed the rigorous testing of CE Level 1 safety standards thanks to the abrasion resistant leather paired with aramid fibres reinforcing the palms. The black contrasting that runs along the little finger and outer palm is indicative of Helstons vintage styling and the beige leather will become all the more handsome with age, taking on a distinguished patina.
REVIT HYDRA 2
“Lightweight, warm, waterproof with a short cuff. A daily commuter's winter dream.”
The Rev'It! Hydra 2 H2O is an ideal glove for urban riders that persist into the colder days. Its Hydratex membrane will keep you dry while a featherlight 3M Thinsulate G-liner will trap your body heat and keep your fingers from turning into ice cubes. The outside is made from a sturdy goatskin palm combined with an abrasion-resistant PWR|Shell back. The prominent, ergonomic knuckle protector is covered with a heavy rib texture. We love the short cuff nature of this glove because a full-on gauntlet can get a bit finicky when just going on short bursts through town. The Hydra 2 has a heavy rib elastic cuff that does an excellent job at sealing the glove around the wrist, and there is an adjustable velcro tab to ensure a secure fit. In our opinion, this is one of the better looking cold weather gloves out there, in three subtle but stylish colourways. Perfect for when you've had to put away your summer gloves but aren't ready for bulky depths-of-winter gauntlets just yet!
FUEL MARSHAL TROUSERS
“I like the fact that they're thicker, the armour covers so much of your hips and knees. The armour pockets have a side zip entry which makes it easier to get the armour in and out. And I think they look good.”
Purveyors of some of the most widely coveted retro-style adventure trousers on the market, Fuel certainly know what they’re doing. The Marshal Trousers offer a very welcome shift in focus to comfort for all riders, without losing any of the attractive looks and class-leading protection - CE AAA Approved, no less.
We’ve all been there - lusting after our dream gear for weeks, if not months, but when it comes down to trying on, there’s no size that quite works. That’s not the case with the Fuel Marshal - they have made it their mission to provide the best-fitting riding trousers for any and all body sizes and shapes. This is thanks to innovative side gussets, using accordion stretch panelling that not only fit the aesthetic, but enhance the fit around the contours of your body, for supreme comfort whatever your body type.
PANDO MOTO MARK KEV 02 CARGO TROUSERS
“I think these are my favourite trousers that I own. Practical, comfortable and stylish, what's not to like.”
Pando Moto’s Mark cargo pants use super-stretch Cordura® denim, achieving a stylishly casual look off the bike. This industrial material is being used in some of the world’s harshest environments, yet its versatility makes it perfect as a motorcycle jean. Backed with an aramid fibre lining in the abrasion and impact zones, the Mark comes with SAS-TEC TripleFlex CE approved hip and knee armour included in the price. These impressive features secure these jeans with a CE Level AA certification. The Mark cargo pants are a standout piece of gear, and the calibre of the materials is backed up by well-executed details: the cuffs are fully adjustable to provide some tailoring over your boots, and the YKK zippered vents on the thighs offer excellent airflow. These are a big hit with our team and it’s certainly easy to see why.
REVIT ARROW RIDING TRAINERS
“I think a good test for any trainer or urban style shoe, is 'do you wear it when you're not riding?' and I do.”
The Arrow from Dutch brand Revit is a riding shoe designed for tearing up the streets in the spring summer months. It may look like a casual trainer for the weekend but the Arrow is a serious piece of protective motorcycle gear.
For the outer layer Revit use a matte Nubuck leather which has been partially perforated and backed up by 3D Air Mesh. This construction makes it the ideal choice for those riders seeking comfort in the warmer months, offering improved ventilation throughout the trainer which allows your feet to breath both on and off the bike.
Revit use thermoformed, reinforced heel and toe cups with an injected ankle cup at the rear for a secure fit. This molding process helps the Arrow to achieve CE safety approval by efficiently shielding vulnerable parts of the feet to protect them in the event of impact, all without compromising on the style and comfort.
STYLMARTIN MATRIX WATERPROOF BOOTS
“I love these, absolutely one of my favourite pieces of clothing to wear.”
The Stylmartin Matrix is a sturdy multi-purpose boot with an off-road look to them. They are an hommage to the popular Hi-Port motorcross boot of the 70s and while the Matrix boots are definitely ready to eat some dust, they're a very road-worthy boot too. Stylmartin made the Matrix an extremely comfortable boot that works for touring and commuting as well as for off-road adventures.
The outer layer consists of water-repellent full-grain leather backed up by a waterproof and breathable membrane. Protectors for the ankles, shins and calves are incorporated in the design of the boot and in the box you'll find two metal toe caps which you can screw into the Vibram sole. The boots are fastened through a big velcro tab and two nylon ratchet clips.
The Matrix is a versatile boot combining functionality with killer looks. And since you're getting a pair of Stylmartins, you know these will last you a long time.
KNOX TREKKER WATERPROOF RUCKSACK
“I have a top box now which I just shove this in. But when I didn't have that I needed a backpack so I went with the fully waterproof Knox Trekker to carry all of my precious and delicate recording equipment around in and it's never let me down.”
Knox ups the ante when it comes to motorcycle backpack design and introduces the Trekker Rucksack. The fully waterproof roll-top design is packed to the brim with functionality any rider can appreciate. The 25 litre main compartment is fully seam sealed to ensure anything you put inside stays dry. Behind the main compartment you'll find a separate padded and zipped laptop slot that has an integrated waterproof dry bag to guarantee your electronics stay bone dry.
BEELINE MOTORCYCLE SAT NAV
“It's nice when you can go minimalist with your sat nav. It suits the aesthetic of any retro looking motorcycle and provides simple, easy to follow directions.”
The Beeline Moto is a beautifully simple alternative to bulky motorbike sat navs. The small, circular device gives you directions by virtue of its clever dot and arrow interface, telling you exactly when and where your next turn is coming up. It is instinctive and straight-forward to use: connect the Beeline to your smartphone app via Bluetooth and put your destination in the Beeline app, the little device will take care of the rest. The Beeline comes with a pivoting sticky mount and elastic handlebar mount which attach to your bike in a matter of seconds. Battery life is impressive, even when you ride in the dark and the backlight automatically comes on. We found navigating with the Beeline a breeze, even when making our way through a busy city. The little unit has definitely earned its spot in our jacket pocket. It's so small we often forget it's there, until we're getting lost again and the Beeline comes to the rescue.
INTERPHONE UCOM 16 BLUETOOTH HEADSET
“This is the other bit of tech that I cannot live without. You look at it and think 'do i really need it, is it going to make that big a difference to my riding?' Yes is the answer, undoubtedly so.”
The new UCOM range from Interphone is the most advanced yet - incredibly slimline and unobtrusive, but vitally brings extensive compatibility with all Interphone models on the market, as well as other Bluetooth devices, such as your preferred GPS. No longer will you have to waste time trying to pair with your buddies before you ride before inevitably giving up and riding in silence - this new range makes it remarkably easy.
